However, Devasya Kattappana, the owner of the bus, was enraged by the incident and tried to take the bus away by force with the police. This led to clashes between police and locals. Police lashed out at locals. People turned and hurled stones at the police. This made the police even more outraged.

Thampan did not obey, however. Kozhimala Aurachan died on the spot and Udumbakkal Mathew lost both his legs in the firing.
Then the people panicked and organized in many places. Hundreds of policemen in various vehicles from various stations in the district returned to Thankamani in the evening. The policemen, who came to the eyes, was crucified and carried them into Kattappanga. The policemen turned to different groups and climbed the doors and gorsers in various areas.
Frightened by the police crackdown, the men hid on farms in the area. It was later reported that the women had been gang-raped by the police while the women and children were alone in the house. The men, who were taken into police custody and taken to Kattappana, were also subjected to brutal third-degree torture. The incident later came to be known as the 'Thankamani shooting' and the 'Thankamani gang rape'.
